Troubleshooting Garage Door Issues

Wooden garage doors with automatic openers.

Garage Door Issues

A lot of different issues can come up with garage doors — some minor, some more serious. Here’s a breakdown of common problems by category:

Garage Door Mechanical Issues

  • Broken or worn springs – The torsion or extension springs do most of the lifting. When they break, the door becomes extremely heavy and often won’t open.
  • Frayed or broken cables – The lift cables can wear out or snap, causing the door to hang unevenly or jam.
  • Worn rollers – Rollers can crack, seize, or come off the tracks, leading to jerky or noisy operation.
  • Bent or misaligned tracks – If the tracks get bumped (often by a car or object), the door may not move smoothly or might get stuck.
  • Loose or damaged hardware – Hinges, brackets, and bolts can

Electrical & Opener Issues

  • Dead remote batteries – Surprisingly common and easy to overlook.
  • Faulty opener motor – The motor can burn out or wear down, preventing proper lifting.
  • Misaligned safety sensors – The photo eyes at the bottom of the door can get dirty or knocked out of alignment, stopping the door from closing.
  • Wiring problems – Damaged or disconnected wires can interrupt signals between the opener, wall switch, and sensors.
  • Limit switch misadjustment – If the open/close limits are off, the door might not fully open or close, or may reverse direction unexpectedly.

Garage Door Panel & Balance Problems

  • Warped or damaged panels – Especially with wooden or metal doors hit by vehicles or exposed to weather.
  • Unbalanced door – If one side is heavier, the door can strain the opener and fail to stay open halfway.
  • Rust or corrosion – Particularly on older steel doors or components, leading to stiffness or failure.

Environmental or Maintenance-Related Issues

  • Cold weather binding – In freezing temperatures, moisture can cause the door to stick to the ground or thicken the lubricant.
  • Lack of lubrication – Dry rollers, springs, and hinges cause noise and extra strain.
  • Obstructions in the tracks – Dirt, leaves, or small debris can block movement.
